Trustees recommend $50,000 in budget cuts for 2026/27

The Committee of the Whole forwarded amended budget materials to Trust Council after recommending reductions to several proposed expenses.

The Denman Firestarter · Governance · 2026-02-18 · updated 2026-10-19 · Trust-wide: every island edition carries this report.

The recommendations include cutting $50,000 from three budget options at a 50 per cent reduction, and removing $25,000 and $50,000 from two Reconciliation Action Plan budget lines. The Committee of the Whole voted to forward the draft 2026/27 budget materials, as amended, to Trust Council for approval.[1]

The committee also recommended reducing the draft budget by $33,750 by holding one additional regular business meeting virtually next fiscal year. Other carried recommendations included cuts to meeting expenses, contracted services, staff recognition and training, and newspaper subscriptions.[1]

A proposed $45,564 reduction to the Indigenous Relations Manager salary and benefits line was defeated. The minutes record that 10 opposed, nine were in favour and one abstained; the abstention was counted as a vote in favour, resulting in a tie and a defeated resolution.[1]

The minutes say the current estimated tax increase is 9.9 per cent for Local Trust Areas and 18.1 per cent for Bowen Island Municipality. They also record that planned spending has increased 6.6 per cent over last year.[1]

The meeting recording includes discussion of the budget reduction options and the vote outcomes. The minutes say the next Committee of the Whole meeting was scheduled electronically for May 13, 2026, at 9 a.m.[1]
