The North Pender Local Trust Committee voted to let the current industrial land use continue while it considers a rezoning application, and directed that bylaw enforcement actions, including notices, cease during that process.[1]
The application concerns a site where a temporary use permit had expired; the applicant was seeking to continue operations while the rezoning application was under discussion. Staff said the draft rezoning bylaw would allow further discussion and community engagement.[1]
The committee directed the applicant to provide an ecological assessment of impacts on adjacent properties, and directed staff to proceed with the application and provide terms of reference to the applicant.[1]
During public comment, a representative of the Pender Islands Conservancy Association said the site is adjacent to nature reserves and that expanded industrial use could affect ecological values; the representative asked the committee to pursue other location options.[2] Another speaker said a possible alternative site was being explored, but that nothing was settled.[2]
The applicant said they were unsure whether potential new locations were viable and wanted to proceed with determining allowed uses and obtaining professional reports.[1]
