North Pender trustees ask staff to explore options on clearcutting

The committee directed staff to examine possible bylaw steps and coordination with other agencies after a motion to prohibit logging on the island was defeated.

The North Pender Firestarter · Governance · 2023-01-20 · updated 2026-10-19 · North Pender Island

The North Pender Local Trust Committee directed staff to explore possible next steps to address clearcutting, including through bylaws or coordination with other agencies.[1]

Earlier in the meeting, trustees defeated a motion to prohibit logging across North Pender, defining logging as cutting more than one tree per acre per year.[1]

During discussion, staff said the proposed prohibition was unenforceable and outside Islands Trust authority; the minutes also record that enforcement of current bylaw infractions was occurring.[1]

The committee also requested a community information meeting before March 31, 2023, on the Groundwater Sustainability Implementation Project.[1]
